blogger meetup for brunch at roka aldwych

This has been a long overdue post when I decided to meet up with fellow food bloggers Em ( Catch 52), Felicia ( Dancing in High Heels) and off course Ellie ( The Young Domestic Goddess). I’ve been following them since forever and 4 was just a perfect number to meet with these eaters and get to know one another face to face. I found this really awesome offer on Timeout which was a bottomless Han Setto Brunch at Roka for £30 pp instead of their usual £55. Honestly I didn’t know what Han Setto meant but that basically means “meal menu” where you get 10 set dishes ( I didn’t realise this was unlimited), you choose 1 main and when the dessert sharing platter arrives the bottomless prosecco ends (boo). My preconception was that the 10 dishes were going to be super tiny but surprisingly that’s not the case! With the starters being unlimited, we ordered multiple portions of sashimi which was a no brainer, but the general consensus was that we weren’t a big fan of the potato salad – it wasn’t great and since we had a lot of incoming dishes we wanted to reserve our appetite for what’s to come. Here were the 10 dishes for the Han Setto Sunday Brunch:
– Edamame salad with ginger and soy dressing (I told the girls that Chinese people actually eat the whole runner bean, but off course when they are cooked and not raw because it’s very tough!)
– Selection of vegetable pickles (basically a side dish to cleanse your palette)
– Baby spinach leaves with sesame dressing (very small portion, it’s ok nothing special)
– Tomato salad with shiso and jihiki dressing (I don’t like tomatoes so I left that to the girls)
– Chef’s sashimi selection (one of our favourites)
– Salmon & avocado with wasabi tobiko maki rolls (sooo good)
– Crispy prawn and avocado maki rolls (again, one of our favs)
– Potato salad with bacon and egg (meh nothing special)
– Beef, ginger and sesame dumplings (it was great to have a hot dish in the mix)
– Tempura vegetable and prawn tempura (standard battered veg and tempura)

For our main, we decided to order something different and share between us so we ordered:
– Beef sirloin, chilli and spring onion
– Glazed baby back ribs with no cashew nuts (because Ellie are allergic to nuts)
– Sea bream fillet, ryotei miso and red onion

I wished we had another portion of the ribs, they were so tasty and sticky! I wasn’t keen on the sea bream and I would have loved to try their mushroom hot pot and their salmon fillet. Next time!

The Prosecco has been free flowing for the past hour and we were having a fabulous time. When the dessert platter came out we couldn’t help to resist and take all the photos and videos we need before diving in! 3 cameras, 4 camera phones, instagrammed, tweeted and a snapchat later; we finally dug in to the show stopping Roka dessert platter. it was well presented and tasted as delicious as it looked. The chocolate buddha was our favourite and devoured it in seconds. I couldn’t have had a better brunch and left the restaurant fairly drunk. We all went our separate ways and i just went home to pass out on my bed (yes, I spent the sunny Sunday afternoon passed out). I hope to do more of these in the future! May x
