It’s officially Spring and what better way to celebrate the long Easter break than an Easter afternoon tea experience at the Langham Hotel. For limited time only, Cherish Finden – our favourite pastry chef on this land has created the cuuuutteesst Easter pastries with a sweet story for her inspiration.

Once seated (oh gosh I was late) I was served a glass of Laurent Perrier Brut Champagne to accompany the sweet amuse bouche with rhubarb compote. I am not a massive fan of rhubarb but I particularly enjoyed the consistency and sweetness of the vanilla blancmange (I had no idea what it was called until I read Aftab and Sheepa‘s review of the experience) – a gelatinous dessert made with cornflour and milk. As for my choice of tea – I wanted to try something new and went for the light ginger tea. It wasn’t over-powering but remained fragrant to compliment my palette with the selection of finger sandwiches which were:
Cucumber, cream cheese and chives | Smoked salmon and asparagus on a rye cracker | Peppered beef pastrami and a Red Leicester coleslaw | Corn fed chicken with sultanas on carrot bread | Truffled duck egg brioche
Each finger sandwich offers a unique texture to my taste buds and a true British experience on my plate. I have to say the truffled duck egg brioche was my favourite and couldn’t say no for more!

We were then presented a warm serving of classic scones and hot cross scones with a choice of…wait wait, lets rewind! What, HOT CROSS SCONES?? This is amazing; and how have we not tried/heard/seen these before? With a hint of cinnamon and raisons in these beautifully presented hot cross scones, I waited no more to spread a layer of Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry jam on top. I know there has been a debate as to what layer goes first but we all agreed to disagree amongst ourselves (I think it’s a regional thing) where I prefer to have my clotted cream as the base layer ( for the fact that it gels on the scone and jam well). I have to applaud Cherish for these scones – the best I’ve had and very innovative!

The long anticipated Easter themed pastries arrived and I couldn’t contain my excitement as I saw those cute little rabbits hopping on to the pastries with a see-saw! It’s a complete work of art and here goes the story:
The bunnies are very excited to race to get the apple and so they hop across the first obstacle (which is the mango and passion fruit jelly with white choc mousse cake) with the hula hoop to get to the 2 white hollowed chocolate eggs with a cute sunny side up floating on the top. Then they race to the tanginess of the lemon shortbread (to cleanse our palette) and to the apple marshmellow foam with lemon chocolate mousse tower before jumping on to the see-saw on a 64% chocolate mousseine with raspberry and pistachio financier.
It was a delightful afternoon tea to share with everyone, thank you Aysem for the complimentary experience before the launch. The Easter afternoon tea experience is limited time only from 21st – 28th March, priced at £48pp and £59pp incl a glass of N.V Laurent-Perrier Brut Champagne and seatings at 1pm, 3.15pm and 5.30pm.
