What’s All the Fuss About Angelina in Paris

Everyone that’s visited Paris or wanting to visit Paris has been banging on about Angelina – a famous French tea house located at 226 Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Angelina is largely known for their hot chocolate and Mont Blanc dessert so off course I had to check this place out. When we arrived we thought we would avoid a queue considering it was 4pm; oh we were wrong – the queue looked long at first but it was a short 15 minute wait. Angelina has attracted many tourists and not a single French person was in the queue!

As we went inside; the so called ‘tea house’ was pretty, quaint and so French – the restaurant is very big but very packed – full of tourists. As we skimmed through the menu; I knew I just had to order their signature pastries but there were sooo many eye-drooling pictures of pastries that I wanted to try.

The signature Angelina Pastry: Mont Blanc – Meringue, whipped cream, chestnut cream vermicelli (€9.20)
So this is the signature dish; it appeared small but it was surprisingly filling. It was sweet but very rich and I couldn’t finish the whole thing which is a bit of a waste considering it’s €9.20 – it’s not cheap and not worth €9.20. If I had to rate it out of 10? I give it a 5/10

My friend ordered the Millefeuille à la vanille Bourbon – Layers of caramelized puff pastry, light Bourbon vanilla cream (€9). Even my friend couldn’t finish it as she is self-confessed dessert lover! She thought it was too sweet as well.

As if I wasn’t greedy enough; I ordered another pastry from their new collection: Eclair caramel au beurre salé which is the Chou pastry, caramel cream with Guérande salted butter, caramel icing (€7.30)
Again I was disappointed 🙁 I love eclairs and I was surprised to find myself not enjoying it. It was quite dry and overly sweet – not something I would pay €7.30.

My overall experience has been disappointing and had really really high expectations. Maybe their lunch menu is better? But from what I have tried; it wasn’t worth paying this much for 3 pastries. I didn’t order the famous hot chocolate because I felt that I will just get an ultimate sugar rush and fall into a cardiac arrest! I am not usually negative in my reviews but these are my honest opinion about my experience. My friend is French and also thinks that it is over priced and overly sweet.
Everyone has different experiences I guess but I would love to hear what you think?

May x
