Yauatcha (part of Hakkasan Group) is contemporary Chinese dining with expertly crafted Dim Sum and handmade sweet. One of their newest locations is in Broadgate Circle, Liverpool Street which has taken half of the Circle with balcony views. The always wonderful Ellie took me as her plus one to catch up over some cocktails, wine, dim sum and more. She has a serial obsession for Dim Sum and what better company than a Chinese friend like myself to accompany her and make sure she wasn’t missing out on popular dishes within the Dim Sum menu. It wasn’t the best idea to get drunk on a Wednesday evening as I had 2 more working days left but hey; we have forever to moan and be old so we ensured we had a wonderful time. I always like a surprise in my cocktail so when the cute lil waiter asked me what I wanted to drink; my usual line is “surprise me”, I like sweet, refreshing cocktails so he made me a Mai Tai (he nailed it!) whilst Ellie had the White Lady cocktail.

We wanted to try everything on the menu so we chose the classic Black pepper and Wagyu beef dumpling (黑椒和牛蒸餃), Scallop shui mai (帶子釀燒賣), Char siu bun (蠔皇叉燒包) and Har gau (筍尖鮮蝦餃). If you are familiar with Dim Sum you would know to always order Har gau (steamed prawns wrapped in rice transluscent dough), Shui mai (pork filled dumplings) and Char siu bun (white fluffy bun with pork filling).

For our mains we had: Truffle pork belly rib (黑菌花腩骨), Crispy sweet and sour seabass (酥炸糖醋海鱸魚), Egg fried rice with long bean (豆角蛋炒飯), Gai lan with oyster sauce (芥蘭菜). The ribs were so tasty, the stickier the better I say! However, I wasn’t very keen with the seabass as the portion was very big which could feed 4 people. Also, it seemed more fast food than contemporary dining so it’s not something I would order again. The egg fried rice was slightly on the oily side as I tend to like my rice dishes fairly plain with a hint of flavour. I was surprised that Ellie knew what Gai lan was as it is a traditional Chinese veg that’s normally served up with oyster sauce so credit to her. By this moment, we have had a fair few glasses of Sylvaner ‘Sylvacello’, Cave de Turckheim 2012 white wine and admittedly, we were terrible drunks! There was a moment of confession of how much we liked each-other which was slightly cheesy (and give me a bin bad purleeease) but we really bonded over the short period of our friendship. To top it all off; I had a beautifully presented Cassis and violet grand macaron. Thank you Ellie, we had so much fun and thank you Yauatcha City for accommodating us drunks! May x
