Review at DSTRKT London Restaurant in Soho

DSTRKT is a destination for glamorous late night partying in their chic, low lit restaurant and lounge in Soho, London. Just like Whisky Mist, Buddha Bar and Mahiki; their venue is a unique, state of the art, two-level space that sets a new benchmark of opulence and modernity. DSTRKT is known for their exclusive night life for sure; but how about their restaurant? I was kindly invited by their PR to come down and experience DSTRKT first and so I brought my lovely friend April (www.apriloves.com) to dine with me. Upon arrival and 10 minutes early; April was already there; dressed in matching black outfits as me – I guess black is the same skinny 🙂

We walked up to front of house to let the young lady at front desk know that we have a booking at 7pm as invited by PR. Long story short; she was very rude! They say first impression counts and they stick for life – unfortunately she killed the mood for us right from the start because she insisted her “clipboard” says reservation for 1 and amongst many excuses why it’s a reservation for 1. Nevertheless; she instructed us to go down and so we did just that with mild frowns on our faces. You would think she would at least crack/fake a smile during the awkward interaction (it wasn’t even a conversation). As we paced ourselves down the staircase; we were welcomed with a warm reception and our frowns reversed (thank god!) It was a whole new dynamic downstairs; set in a split level setting, the lower dining room was a vision with shell like rotating discs across the ceiling in Dory blue!

Their menu offers a selection of modern-European dishes based on a sharing concept but they do offer a great selection of sashimi and sushi rolls! I’ve always welcomed a surprise menu or a recommendation and so we had just that! So what did we have and what did I like?

– eel and avocado roll (our favourite dish of the night! mm mm mmm!)
– cod fritters with seaweed salad (I really liked this; not only does this look presentable but it had a beautiful crunch which complimented very well with the seaweed salad).
– chicken satay with peanut sauce (generous size of chicken satay for a small plate dish 🙂 )
– soft shell crab roll (they were huge! They did remind me of Gimbap as they are a lot larger. We thought there were a lot of salad in this roll and so it got a lil messy when eating this. Not surprisingly, each roll fell apart when we tried to pick it up with our chopsticks)
– vegetable spring rolls (generous amount of spring rolls for a small plate)
– raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake with mixed berries (April and I just look at each other as we took our first bite. They definitely saved the best until last!

What I didn’t like:
– bowl of crispy squid (aka calamari) with sweet chilli sauce and lime (we both thought this was very salty; the only dish we didn’t want to finish)

I was rather surprised by their online menu as some of their filters seem to be blank (Nibbles, Grill, Japanese). Service was mixed; there were times when a dish arrived unexplained and I had to ask what the dish was; aside from that there were a couple of members who were fantastic and made us feel so welcome! All in all; we enjoyed the ambience that DSTRKT created; I enjoyed the sharing plate concept and the food was overall delicious. As we said our goodbyes and walked up their stairs; we ignored the lady at front desk on our way out – she didn’t deserve a bye.
Thanks to the lovely PR team for a great evening and complimentary meal. All opinions are my own. Fore more details about DSTRKT and their menu, you can find this here.
